For my birthday this year, Aldo planned an amazing road trip along the coast of southern Italy. We started in Sorrento, where we stayed a couple of nights at the Hilton Sorrento Palace, and then drove up the coast.  We made pit-stops along Italy’s picturesque Amalfi Coast, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and Florence – the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region. Afterwards we made our way up to Sanremo. We spent a week exploring and taking in the beautiful sights and enjoying delicious Italian food.

Our Stay in Sorrento

Arriving at the Hilton Sorrento Palace

The day prior to my birthday, we flew into the Naples airport, rented a car and made our way to the hotel which was about an hour and 15 minutes from the airport. When we arrived, we noticed signs for a private gated outdoor parking lot.  As we pulled into the lot, we were taken aback by the mountains that filled the background of the property. The hotel was sitting on top of a hill, in a perfect location a few blocks away from the town of Sorrento. On one side of the hotel, we found ourselves surrounded by a magnificent mountainous backdrop, while on the other side was a marvelous view of the ocean and the town. The location was calm and peaceful and about a 10 minute walk from the city center.

The check-in process at the hotel was very simple and the hotel representative was pleasant. We were upgraded to a beautiful King room on the 2nd floor (the hotel had a total of 7 floors). Our room had a balcony from which we had incredible panoramic ocean and mountain views!

The room itself had a modern and simple design. Everything was in white tones which made it feel very relaxing and soothing to the eye. The room was very spacious and included a small work/desk area in one corner, as well as a sun bed in the other (facing the balcony). The bathroom was pretty big as well, with a walk-in shower and a full-size bathtub.

Breakfast Options

As Hilton Diamond members, we had breakfast included with our stay, as well as access to the Pompeii Lounge. A buffet breakfast was served in the main restaurant, and also in the Pompei lounge.

The main restaurant got pretty crowded during the morning rush-hour, but the Pompeii Lounge was relatively quiet the two days we were there. The breakfast selection included pastries, fruits, cereals, deli meats and cheeses. There was also an omelette station in the main restaurant. We were advised that the selections were the same in the restaurant and in the Pompeii Lounge, although, the lounge did not have the omelette station nor the fresh orange juice machine. However, if you decided to have breakfast in the Pompeii Lounge, you could order an omelette and have it brought over from the restaurant. Also, the restaurant and the Pompeii Lounge shared a terrace that had beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains.

We enjoyed our breakfast outside on the terrace the two days that we were there. At one point, we were advised that there was another lounge at the hotel (an Executive Lounge for guests who had one of the Executive Rooms on the top two floors… unfortunately, we did not have access to that lounge and therefore, I’m not able to provide any feedback).

Birthday Surprise at the Hilton Sorrento Palace

On the day of my birthday, when we came back from a day of exploring the Amalfi Coast, I had a little surprise waiting in the room. There was a delicious mini cake, prosecco and a selection of my favorite berries in martini glasses. We enjoyed some cake and berries, popped the champagne and headed down to the pool for a few hours to relax a little before dinner.

The pool at the hotel is one of the more unique pools I’ve seen during my travels. It is a three-tiered infinity pool that resembles a river. The hotel provided floaties, so you could borrow one and slide down the three-tiered levels to the bottom. The design of the pool is perfect against the backdrop of the mountains. From certain angles, it almost looked like a river that was embedded within the mountains.

The Verdict

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hilton Sorrento Palace. It is a beautiful property and it checked off everything we were looking for during our stay:

  1. Spacious room with amazing views
  2. Proximity to Sorrento and surrounding Amalfi Coast cities
  3. Great Service
  4. Breakfast options included with stay
  5. Beautiful pool

I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone staying in the Sorrento area.
